Marciarita - Multiple Sclerosis, Fibromyalgia and Arthritis... the fun times.
My story and life with it.
Politics & Stuff

My views on life, especially now that I have been placed on the "Disabled List" for the time, tend to be Left of Center.  I have had a Political Awakening.....

I am a Recovering Republican......

I really thought I was a Republican - because they stood for Lower Taxes AND Less Government.  Well, John Stossel showed in his show about the 10 Biggest Myths that the Federal Government has always GROWN under Republicans!!!!  I also oppose the fiscal irresponsibility of the Bush Tax Cuts.  They were designed to attract votes, not be responsible.

MYTH #8 — Republicans Shrink the Government

Republicans always trot out the slogan that they oppose big government and want to shrink the federal payroll.

President Bush tells us that "big government is not the answer."

President Reagan told us, "Our government is too big and it spends too much."

But for more than 75 years, no Republican administration has cut the size of government.

Since George W. Bush became president, government spending has risen nearly 25 percent.

And the spending increase isn't just tied to the war on terrorism.

The Office of Management and Budget says spending at the Environmental Protection Agency is up 12 percent; it's up

14 percent at the Agriculture Department,

30 percent at the Department of the Interior;

64 percent at the Department of Labor, and

70 percent at the Department of Education.

And the pork keeps pouring out. Even the Peanut Festival in Dothan, Ala., got $200,000.  Alabama congressman Terry Everett, a Republican, got them the money. He wouldn't talk to us about it, but the locals said they like getting your money. "I think it's a waste of money, but if they're going to waste money, I guess it's better to waste it here than anywhere else," one man told me.

Economist Stephen Moore, a Republican, says, "We fought a war against big government and you know what? Big government won."

He noted, "You look at what's happened to the government in the 10 years since the Republicans took control of Congress, the government is twice as big."

Actually, the older I get, the more Political I seem to be getting.  I see an aging Baby-Boomer population that is going to have its share of aches and pains (things some of us were kindly given early doses of).  I am the very end of the Baby-Boomers (1964) and my husband is towards the beginning (we have almost a 13-year age difference).

I have become quite Liberal, though I do not hug trees and I do eat meat, but when it comes to taking care of each other - we are failing in many areas.  Actually, I always was Liberal - just didn't know where I really stood.  I was for some kind of gun control my entire life.

Here is a really good Political Quiz, put out by the Libertarian Party, that I think everyone should take before they vote.  BTW, I found out that I am NOT Libertarian......  (I am -6.13, -4.40)

Here is another good little quiz (I am a 10)......

The advances in Medical Science and the ability to keep people alive longer is all and good, but sometimes you are asking a person to live in Hell in doing so.  I think of the lady, Terri Schiavo, whose parents want her kept alive.  I totally disagree and why?  Because what if, just what if, Terri knows what her life is - and yet she is unable to communicate what I am sure she would be pleading for, "Let me go, please."  I also see all the money that could be used to save the lives of others being diverted to keep this one woman alive.  Who is playing "God" here?

Call me cold-hearted but I am realistic.  I cannot think of anything more hellish than to be stuck in my body yet unable to communicate and yet that is a very real possibility for someone like myself.  I am also Pro-Kevorkian.  Again, call me cold-hearted, but I think it is more cruel to have Medical Science keep people alive who do not wish remain here on Earth.  Admit it, none of us want to lose a loved one, especially because that means all hope of 'fixing them' is gone, but it is also cruel and selfish to keep someone else alive whose quality of life is gone.

I am not going to lie and say that I have not seen my fair share of friends with MS who have passed away for many various reasons (from falling in a bathtub, suicide and from complications due to other auto-immune diseases), but I most often hear, "Respitory failure due to complications from MS."  It is as if they just finally grew tired, closed their eyes and said, "Goodbye."

MS can be a very mean disease, but the medical community and especially the Government can be even more cruel with their fears of prescribing medicines that might actually help people feel better.  Oh, to list the medications I am currently on.  In fact, this past May I quit taking three of my daily medications .   I was so doped up I was falling asleep sitting up and barely able to function.....  I was also mentally and emotionally numb.  What a way to live.

Of course, if a Pharmacy makes it - it is the only way to go.  Oh yes, the Pharmaceutical Industry simply rapes those who may need their medications the most.  Bush sold the Medicare Prescription drug benefit out to the Pharmaceutical Companies.....

Thought Bubble:  A Drug Company comes up with a new drug, which has been researched with say, funds from the MS Society to get the research started.  Then the research and study into the drug is in large part paid for my the Government's NIH (actually you and me via taxes), yet they charge exorbitant prices saying, "We have to recoup our Research Costs."

BS!!!!!  They have to make money and Market the stuff.

During this year's Superbowl, I was personally more embarrassed to watch a Commercial saying "Erections lasting longer than 4 hours need immediate attention" than with a quick blip of Janet Jackson's boob.  I don't get it (but I actually do......).

I am currently appalled at how well the Republicans are able to SPIN information (most of the time it is by the act of omitting important information).  They treat the American Public as though they were not very intelligent.  Actually, they work on people who really do not keep up with the REALITIES of what is going on.  Ignoriss is Bliss.  And do not get me started on the Christian Coalition - they are infiltrating our Government and walking a fine-line between the Separation of Church & State.  Why is it the Government's responsibility to tell me what I can and cannot do behind closed doors?  And as far as Compassion goes.....  Turn it all over to God.  Well folks, that doesn't help - you must help yourself first.  Remember, God has over 6 Billion + people to deal with now.

The extreme Christian Evangelical Movement has me a bit concerned.  This rampant 'Soul Saving' is driving me nuts.  It is more important to 'Save a Soul' than to 'truly help and the poor and sick' without any strings attached?  WWJD?   I prefer my soul to sleep when I pass on.  I can hope that what I do with my life while I am alive will impact others.  As far as a whole body-resurrection thing......  For those that are sick, disabled, disfigured, etc., which body do you actually come back in?  I haven't figured that one out yet.  But I guess people need to dream of a better life one day and the chance of seeing old friends and family and not accept that once you pass on -  your soul probably does too.  After all - dreaming of a better after-life is what is recruiting Islamic Suicide bombers left and right.  Powerful - if one is not able to think for ones' self.  Many people need to be told how to act, what to think, etc.   I don't exactly fall into that category.

As far as the Rapture thing goes.  If God wants his selected "saved souls" to sit at his side while this so called loving God makes everyone else suffer, um, not for me.  Heaven to me, is not sitting and watching people suffer.  That would be HELL!!!!  I'd rather be the one suffering, heck I've suffered all of my mortal life anyway.  I guess if you are a cruel and vengeful person yourself, maybe you want to watch your friends and family suffer.  Enjoy your "Vengefest."

There is a big church called 'Lakewood Church' that airs their sermons on TV by Joel Olsteen.  The last time I watched him I was truly scared for the public that was watching him.  It was not long after the US invaded Iraq and In one sentence he was telling the congregation to 'Love thy Enemy' (in this case the Arab Islamic Extremists) and in the very next sentence told them all to 'Keep the Enemy out of your Heart' with the enemy here being referred to as the Devil.  I was able to see the two distinct uses of the word "Enemy" but I am not sure many of the people watching were.

I believe in Jesus' original message to people, help the sick, the poor, the aged, your enemy.  Somewhere his original message has been lost.  Lost to soul saving, guilt trips and basically being told what to believe and what to think.

I am too open minded for this kind of limited Religion, yet I understand that many people need this to keep them in line (though I have heard more so called-Christians call blacks by the 'N' word (which offends me), Hispanics degrading names and so on.  Oh well, at least they have already saved their soul so it doesn't matter what they say or do.

Many former addicts simply get addicted to Religion - and quite often in extreme ways.

Last but not least, Religion is the Biggest TAX-FREE Business in America today.  Think about it.

I oppose the Iraq War.  In fact, I drove around with signs in my car that read, "Don't Attack Iraq" before the War.  But, Bush did anyway and out of respect for the troops, I took down my signs.   We have tried before to get our Military Bases into the Middle East.  Think about when we put the Shah of Iran in place, that backfired - big time in 1979 with the Hostage Crisis.  Then, it was the United States that armed Iraq in the 1980's in order to fight against Iran.  The prize was hopefully to get our military bases in Iraq.  But Saddam blew it when he proved how unstable he was when he went in and invaded Kuwait.  The United States sat by in the 1980's when Saddam Hussein killed most of the people that are mentioned as a reason for going to war today and we did a good job of arming him too.  There went our hopes of having a strategic place in the Middle East.  Saudi Arabia insists on being a 'closed society' and the United States would like to put its military bases in a more strategic location (it is all about Land, its natural resources and in this case that would be Oil, and land that is considered Holy).  We are not in Iraq because of Terrorism - there in lies the mass deception.  Bush never was able to sell me on a war with Iraq.

There is an organization called The Project for a New American Century  and their doctrine is American Imperialism.  Here is a snip from the homepage:

The Project for the New American Century  is a non-profit educational organization dedicated to a few fundamental propositions: that American leadership is good both for America and for the world; that such leadership requires military strength, diplomatic energy and commitment to moral principle; and that too few political leaders today are making the case for global leadership. - Great explanation of the PNAC.

Well, I think that says it all (i.e. American Imperialism, Nation Building) and who is behind this ideology?  Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, et al......

If you  are reading this right now and are not aware of the PNAC, then you need a lesson because we are living what they have been outlining for years.

I am nerd enough that I printed all 90-pages of their Doctrine, "Rebuilding America's Defenses"  and have read it, highlighted parts and made notations.  This was published in 2000 - a year before 9/11.  It goes through each Department of the Military, pushes for increases in Military spending, wants to re-position our current troops throughout the world (recently announced by Bush too), well heck, here's from page 11 of the document.... and they can't do anything without a "New Pearl Harbor" as noted on page 63.....  Oh, and of course the 'Axis of Evil' is listed, but they add Syria to the mix.

ESTABLISH FOUR CORE MISSIONS for U.S. military forces:

defend the American homeland;

fight and decisively win multiple, simultaneous major theater wars;

perform the “constabulary” duties associated with shaping the security environment in

critical regions;

transform U.S. forces to exploit the “revolution in military affairs;”

To carry out these core missions, we need to provide sufficient force and budgetary

allocations. In particular, the United States must:

MAINTAIN NUCLEAR STRATEGIC SUPERIORITY, basing the U.S. nuclear deterrent upon a

global, nuclear net assessment that weighs the full range of current and emerging threats,

not merely the U.S.-Russia balance.

RESTORE THE PERSONNEL STRENGTH of today’s force to roughly the levels anticipated in

the “Base Force” outlined by the Bush Administration, an increase in active-duty strength

from 1.4 million to 1.6 million.

REPOSITION U.S. FORCES to respond to 21st century strategic realities by shifting

permanently-based forces to Southeast Europe and Southeast Asia, and by changing naval

deployment patterns to reflect growing U.S. strategic concerns in East Asia.

On the night of 9/11, President Bush said that "America had just had its 21st Century Pearl Harbor."

Some people who claim to have read their whole document, think their plans for World Domination, is right on track.

I say, why aren't we in Saudi Arabia where 15 of the 19 hijackers came from?

And folks, there is NO connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11.  Those of you who still think there is, need to listen more carefully - even Bush and Rumsfeld have admitted it.  I saw through the BS and never accepted their reasoning for attacking Iraq.

Again, we have been trying to get ourselves positioned SOMEWHERE in the Middle East and Iraq appeared to be a really good target.....  What a mess and a mess for years to come.

Iran is now upping its Nuclear Capabilities in direct reaction to the US's invasion of Iraq.  Dangerous, very Dangerous and we have Bush and his 'gut instinct' to blame (actually we have Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Karl Rove, Kristol, et, al to blame).  Remember, Iran is in the middle of Iraq AND Afghanistan with US troops surrounding them.  As Nationalistic as America became after 9/11 don't these idiots in power understand that of course the Iranians are going to feel put on the spot.  HELLO, anybody home up at the Whitehouse?

Oil and Politics and of course Religion.....

On another note, you know those wonderful schools the Americans are rebuilding in both Afghanistan and Iraq?  Guess what is being taught in some of them.......  Islam Extremism......  We are just pumping out more people who will hate Americans even more and every time an innocent Civilian is killed, an entire family turns against the Occupation.  Human Nature and the Culture were not considered in the war planning (poor planners).

Remember, every bomb America drops on Iraq is just more recruitment for the Iraqi's to join a resistance.  This Administration has very poor planning abilities, pure and simple.

If Bush wins a second term, the one good thing I can see is this Country waking up to what he and all his lying cronies are really all about and will move this Country away from the extreme direction it is headed.

This Country is also overwhelmingly Democrat in many of their true personal beliefs.  For instance....

Let's see, most people did NOT want the Assault Weapons Ban to expire (I did because it needed to be re-written - but that's just it, it needed to be DONE and nobody did a thing). - 61% were dissatisfied that the ban expired (09/04).

As far as Abortion goes.... - 54% want abortion to remain legal (09/04)

Medicinal Marijuana (for many of my MS friends) - 80% approve (09/04)

I am heading into my 15th year of being diagnosed with MS and that is often when the disease begins to take a downward course.  The limits that Bush put on Stem Cells is appalling to me and millions of others. - 64% approve of Stem Cell Research (less among Republicans of course but still a majority).

And updated.....  Christopher Reeve has passed away - a POTENT voice for those of us waiting for a cure.  He really was Superman.

When I was stuck in the hospital for several weeks earlier this year, the only 24/7 News Station they offered was FOX.  I do not know how they consider themselves to even be a legitimate News Station (though our local FOX Station did use me as a body prop for a piece on minimally invasive surgery back in 1999 when I had my hysterectomy.....:).  They use such FEAR tactics, Hannity needs a lot of Sanity and Bill O'Reilly I, I, I simply cannot even consider as a Journalist.  His book, "The No Spin Zone" Spun..... especially his fake interview with Hillary Clinton.  Now that's Spinning.....

FOX News immediately discredits anyone who has come out against this Administration who once knew the 'ins and outs.'  Bill O'Reilly is so rude to his guests (unless of course they are Conservative) that I do not even consider him a real Journalist.   O'Reilly sure has been on the 'book-selling circuit' trying to convince people he is an Independent.......

Ann Coulter apparently didn't know that Canada was not involved in Vietnam for an interview exposing her lack of a History Class!!!!!

I noticed on his recent interview with George W. Bush how he 'glossed over' or to be blunt, he did not even mention that Bush announced on the Aircraft Carrier back in May, 2003 that "Major Combat has ended in Iraq and the US and its Allies had Prevailed."  Yes, Bill O'Reilly asked him the easy to spin question about the 'Mission Accomplished Banner' but not about declaring that the war was basically over.......

I once again have tried to give FOX News a chance.  I watched both the Bill O'Reilly and Hannity & Colmes shows back-to-back.  I found myself and my blood pressure rising - just seeing the ticker tape at the bottom saying "Terror Alert - Elevated."  After a few hours of that, I switched over to our local PBS Station and found myself watching people with IQ's far above what was being promoted on FOX.  I suddenly felt a sense of calm - people actually talking intelligently about the issues (I believe it was the end of Frontline I was watching) and not screaming and yelling and accusing each other of this and that.  FOX airs many Bush/Cheney and Republican ads and promote Bush as the next President again over and over again.

That is NOT "Fair & Balanced Reporting" but if you do not keep up with the real News from many different sources, then you have no way of knowing what Propaganda you are seeing on FOX.  Whenever I meet someone who says that "Faux Rocks" I immediately know they do NOT KNOW what is going on in our Country or the world - yes, they are ignorant of the facts!!!!!

Yet think about this - People Expect More from stations like CBS, ABC and NBC (just see what the 60 Minutes II piece on Bush's Guard Service did).

Update on Bill O'Reilly's being accused of sexual harassment.  The lady went to work for CNN.  I just wonder if she knew she could bring O'Reilly down because of past behavior and therefore went BACK to work for FOX - to get the chance to prove what kind of man he really is (and no, I do not have respect for him as I see right through him).

Here are a few pictures that help express how my sister has dealt with things since 9/11....

My mind is full of more Political Wranglings, but there is only so much space here and only so long a person will even read what I have written thus far.  Just Remember these Famous Last Words....

"I am a Uniter, not a Divider."

Well, I think this Country is more divided today than it has been since the Vietnam era.

And that is what some call Leadership?

Though I think our Country is going to be in GRAVE danger if Bush wins a second term, part of me has accepted that great possibility and in that regard - he can keep the messes that his "instincts" got us into.  After all, if Kerry wins, he will be the one inheriting them and what a mess to try and clean up.

I want someone who uses good, sound judgment when making a case for going to war and someone who cares about the working people - not the wealthy who got wealthy off of the working people and certainly not someone who just says they use their 'gut instinct.'
